Hope Springs Eternal :

"Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
Man never Is, but always To be blest:
The soul, uneasy and confin'd from home,
Rests and expatiates in a life to come.

-Alexander Pope,
An Essay on Man, Epistle I, 1733"

The only amendment needed is what is already implied

Hope springs up within us and is instrumental in this life

That is where Charles Sanders Peirce comes in

That is his philosophy even if he proved unable to apply it to his own existence

Hope is not the depressed and malevolent yearning for a life beyond to compensate for a trashy existence here

It is rather constant excitement and inspiration about the smallest to the largest of things which morphs into an intention that morphs into a belief that persists until the belief is validated by experience or not at which point it might be a habit or a rule

Hope is belief in a specific outcome in this life

This is as close to the secret of existence as one can get at this stage of our chronological journey
