Filipino Consciousness: Philosophy of Loob

Introduction

Filipinos continues to situate themselves in the global world. As a previously colonized country, the Filipino identity had been recognized as a culmination of foreign influences. What remains as distinctly Filipino is rapidly becoming unknown to current generation. The proliferation of Filipino values and culture were rapidly being overtaken by Westernization and Globalization. In this paper, I would like to shed light to the existence of Filipino philosophy, specifically the philosophy of loob. I will first clarify the concept of "loob" as an "inner self" and how it is similar or different from the concept of elan vital proposed by Bergson, the Japanese ki, and the Chinese chi. Afterwards, I will show the different manifestations and implications of the philosophy of loob in establishing a Filipino consciousness.

Culture and Philosophy

Cultural recreation produces an avenue for improvements. It involves the abandonment or the refinement of inconsistent beliefs that arise as science and technology evolves, as new explanations and ideas arise, and as global influence push it away from the mainstream culture.
