Golden: Party switch won't change philosophy - WALB 10 Posted: 30 Nov 2010 01:53 PM PST VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) – Long time Democrat State Senator Tim Golden has switched to the Republican party. He joins five state representatives who made the move after being re-elected as Democrats. Golden says he made the switch to be sure the people in his district are heard. Golden says his voting record and philosophy won't change. "But having that seat at the table when it comes to budget when it comes to tax reform when it comes to reapportionment is critically important for south Georgia." State representatives Amy Carter and Ellis Black made the switch last week. Now Senator Tim Golden is the sixth Georgia Democrat to change parties. Valdosta State University Professor James LaPlant says elected officials change parties for three reasons:
He says the third reason is the most important one and that's what seems to be what's going on in south Georgia. "Right now I serve on appropriations," said Golden. "I serve on finance I serve on insurance so I have some very important committees to our area and I want to retain those." Dr. LaPlant believes switching over to the Republican party allows them to have more impact on the legislative agenda and for the future of Georgia. Tim Golden is the only state senator to switch parties this year.
