LAKE ORION, Mich. - A Lake Orion preschool's snack philosophy is so simple, yet it's quite extraordinary.

It is snack time at the Goddard Preschool. So, what will the four year olds feast on?

How about some freshly sliced Michigan apples or nicely chilled carrot sticks? Then they'll wash it all down with some purified water. There are no dips, no dressings and no sugary drinks.

"A lot of the children are here with us the majority of their day, so we really feel like we can make an impact for the rest of their lives," said owner Kellie McDonald.

Her goal is to get rid of all processed foods.

"We want to serve the children food that looks like a plant and is from a plant, not processed in a plant," McDonald said.

No Goldfish. No pretzels. Not even a graham cracker to be found. How does that play with pint sized pallets?

Four-year-old Jonah is quite pleased with the apples, but not so crazy about the carrots.

"I don't eat carrots if I don't have ranch," he said.

George Krappman brings his daughter Maddie to school every day.

"If anything, it helps us at home because it reinforces
Maddie's good eating habits at home when they do it here at school," said Krappman. "She's exposed to it being done here and at home, and I think it makes our jobs as parents a lot easier."

Maddie told us her favorite food was broccoli. McDonald admitted not every kid loves broccoli. However, she said a child may one day hate broccoli and then take a bite or two the next. The important thing is to keep trying.

We asked McDonald why not offer broccoli to the kids who want it and Goldfish to the others. She told us, "I think we all know what would happen. If we did that, then everybody would be eating Goldfish."

The Philosophy of a Stop Order - Associated Content

Posted: 22 Sep 2010 02:06 PM PDT

One of the first rules many stock investors learn about in regards to stock trading is how to place orders to buy and sell. Market and limit orders are more widespread, but stop orders are often misunderstood. How can
one take full advantage of stop orders without accidental blunders?

Stop order is a protection mechanism. Protection against a sudden market movement, and also protection from one's psychological biases. Imagine that you have purchased some shares of stock at $15.34 several minutes ago. Let us assume that you have gone through the steps of research (whatever it entails), and you have determined a twelve month price target of $18.99. You will tweak this target as you go along based, again, your proprietary set of factors, but let us go back to the subject at hand: stop order. The next question is: what can you afford to lose? No surprises there since it is assumed that stock prices are meant to fluctuate either for a reason or randomly. No need to assume victory, so you will strive for the better outcome while being ready for a less favorable ending. The riddle here is to determine the stop price. You can look for the answer in the chart, fiddle with financial ratios or simply deduct "X" percent or "X" points from the current price. Most if not all discount brokers accept such orders.

With stop price out of the way, you need to take care of setting a proper duration of this order. The two standard preset time frames are "day" that expires at 4:00PM of the same day and "GTC" or Good Until Cancelled that typically has a 90 day time frame. You will choose "GTC", and in addition you are allowed to change the ending date manually right online. No guarantee that each discount brokerage account gives you this feature, but I have seen a few that do.
