It was a neck and neck race all night long, but ultimately businessman Matt Doheny pulled out a win in Tuesday's primary.

"I was extremely disappointed with the results, but I think Doug Hoffman's defeat was a direct result of a campaign that was totally mismanaged," said Mark Barie, chairman of the upstate New York tea party, who threw the party's support behind the Republican, hoping to bring him and the tea party a victory in the primary.

Barie believes Hoffman's tight loss came down to his campaign workers not understanding the region.

"I think Doug's staff let him down. His field manager is from Nebraska and his campaign manager is from Texas. These people had little or no knowledge of New York's 23rd District and it's a very unique place," said Barie.

But the big question moving forward, what happens now ?

Hoffman has previously said if he didn't get the Republican nomination he will run on the conservative ticket.

But Barie fears that could divide the vote and help Democrat U.S. Rep. Bill Owens win re-election in the state's 23rd District. .

"In the next four or five days we'll be polling our members to determine what it is they would like us to do. But I think it's a fact the Hoffman campaign is no longer viable," said Barie, who added he hopes his tea party members will throw their support behind Doheny, who said he would welcome Hoffman's support.

"I was very clear for the past nine months that whoever wins the Republican primary should support the nominee," said Matt Doheny, who also said with or without Hoffman's support he can win in November.

"My opponent should respect the wishes of the voters. I will be the nominee not only on Republican, but also on the Independent party line and that will be good enough to send Bill Owens home."

The Philosophy of Martial Arts Training - Associated Content

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 01:06 PM PDT

When you embark on martial arts training you learn to focus on certain things. Knowing how to punch and kick are basic moves which require your utmost attention. Learning how to hold and grapple is also a fundamental
lesson and being proficient in weaponry will never do you any harm. However, there is so much more you need to know about martial arts that gets overlooked when considering the obvious. Yet it is important to figure these things out if you want to ensure that your martial arts self defense training will be effective when it comes to defending yourself in the streets.

The first mistake that many martial arts trainees make is to walk around in a daze thinking that their skills will prevent them from being attacked. By doing this, you are forgetting the fact that no one knows that you're some sort of expert. There is no neon sign that tells the world you're a self defense machine. Skills also don't prevent you from being attacked out of the blue if you aren't aware of your surroundings. It is well known in martial arts training circles that you must expect the unexpected. This means that you should always keep your eyes open and focus on everything that's around you. That way, if someone does pick you as a victim, you will not be caught cold.

Sparring is also hugely important to the development of any martial artist. Only sessions with real intensity should be considered otherwise you're wasting your time. Too many sparring sessions descend into a game of patty cake with no real purpose. Trainees deliberately miss their punches so that the other person can perform their evasive maneuvers successfully. Real martial arts self defense training should involve full impact sparring once in a while. This will serve to get you prepared for the unbridled ferocity of a street fight. It will also get you used to receiving punches in the face.
