| Philosophy: Feel, Look and Live Better - Luxist Posted: 16 May 2010 12:43 PM PDT ![]() Philosophy is an upbeat, uplifting company with a product line which has earned the raves of everyone from celebrities to consumers to Oprah Winfrey. Oprah Winfrey. Our readers have spoken, and Philosophy has been nominated for a Readers' Choice Award in Best Bodycare Line. Philosophy caters to our whims with effective formulas that smell and feel lovely, and monikers like "Hope in a Jar," "The Afterglow" and "help me" (a retinol cream). And what's in a name? The power of suggestion, and inspiration. "Philosophy's promise is to bring its customers products that inspire them to live a better life by being better to themselves," says the company of their ... philosophy. They were founded in 1996 by Cristina Carlino, a skincare expert with 30 years of industry experience. Cristina's hope was to "bridge the gap" between prescription products and what people could get retail by creating powerful, concentrated treatments that produced real results. Our readers feel they've accomplished that and more with skin-improving, yummy-smelling, happy-making products, some of which probably took more time and care from medical experts in development than what your dermatologist can prescribe. In short, we like Philosophy's positive philosophy, because looking good and feeling good go hand in hand. Vote for the bodycare line that you believe is the best of breed. The voting period runs through May 31st and winners will be announced on June 1. Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election. | Philosophy: Skin Creams that Nourish and Repair - Luxist Posted: 16 May 2010 12:57 PM PDT ![]() Browse through Philosophy's skin care products and you'll notice a recurring theme: simplicity. Labels are understated, there are no capital letters, and pictures of children adorn many of their offerings. Philosophy's philosophy is a breath of fresh air in the beauty industry-and one reason it's a Luxist nominee in the best skin cream line category. Skin care entrepreneur Cristina Carlino founded Philosophy in 1996 with the goal of bridging the gap between the skin creams prescribed by doctors and the ones available over the counter. Her prior experience at Biomedic, a medically focused skin care line primarily directed toward plastic surgeons and dermatologists, gave her the skills to do just that. Philosophy touts this scientific background, emphasizing the fact that all products are made with medically sound ingredients and are overseen by a cadre of doctors and scientists. In that vein, Philosophy likes to point out that its skin creams nourish and repair skin, rather than simply cover up the unhealthy parts. Each offering is directed at a range of specific areas including anti-aging, sun damage, acne, oiliness and dryness. Popular creams include "Hope in a Jar," a daily moisturizer initially made for the medical market that helps reduce wrinkles and skin discoloration (4 oz: $60) and "purity made simple," a one-step daily facial cleanser that's best for removing makeup, as well as cleansing, toning and hydrating skin (16 oz: $32). Just remember: everything stays in lower case. Vote for the skin care line that you believe is the best of breed. The voting period runs through May 31st and winners will be announced on June 1. | Interview III: Pro-student PhD candidate shares smart philosophy - Examiner Posted: 14 May 2010 10:36 AM PDT Welcome to the third installment in the "Q&A" series. Today, we meet Alex Yin. A PhD candidate, from the Higher Education Department, at Penn State University, shares some great advice on what he sees both inside and outside the classroom. Alex has been a student advocate and works hard to demonstrate to students through his volunteering, mentoring, and class discussions that education is more then just "something to do" for four years. Always one to tell a good joke, especially at this interviewer's expense - but not on a personal level - Alex brings you into his mind of certainty and insanity. Question 1: Unemployment. Searching for a field that will allow me to do what I wanted to do and more importantly enjoy it. Here's the thing about PhD though... you have to be selfish. In all honesty, you don't need a PhD (unless you have dreams of running a non-profit organization) to succeed in life, so if you are going to do it-- you have to be selfish. Otherwise why do it? Question 2: Earn good grades (above a 3.5 usually suffices). Also, don't think college is only about learning a trade. College is about discovering who you are. Study hard, but balance that with play. Make friends. (Obviously stay away from crack cocaine too!) Question 3: Don't have any, but that's because I didn't know how to create my own magic. Just because you are doing well in classes, doesn't mean you don't have to see your professors. Make the effort to get to know them. Question 4: College is fun. Why do you think I spent about 8 years in higher education? Life is about balance, so if you feel overwhelmed maybe you are partying too much or maybe you are studying too much. If that doesn't work-- just sit back and thank your lucky stars that you don't look like (Andrew Lambert) the interviewer. (Laughs) Question 5: Besides not going to IU, where Mr. Lambert was? (Laughs) Well, life is about balance and I wish I spent more time doing the social scene (i.e... join some clubs to meet other people). I am a natural introvert and generally I was afraid of people... but I learned this secret... people generally are good. They cry if you hit them, and laugh when you show them a picture of you (Andrew) (Laughs, again)...what this means though is that if you treat them with respect then you will be respected. Don't ever be intimidated by people-- you are just as worthy to be breathing the same air as they do (unless of course you are around Mr. Lambert, then you should hold your breath and embrace his awesomeness). Let's now move into the professional world with a finance professional. The fourth interview takes us from the world of academic into New York City. Getting professional advice on how to be successful is well worth the read. Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election.
