| Flames' Sutter on rules, free agency, draft philosophy - NHL.com Posted: 10 Mar 2010 09:42 AM PST BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter senses his team's hunger for a berth into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Flames beat the Red Wings, 4-2, Tuesday to move into eighth place in the Western Conference race, just two points away from seventh-seeded Nashville. The Flames, 6-3-1 over their last 10, now look to finish strong with seven home games and nine road contests remaining in the regular season. Sutter joined NHL.com and spoke about his team and shared his opinion on the big topic at the GM meetings this week -- hits to the head. NHL.com: What were your impressions of the GM meetings? Sutter: Our League has done such an awesome job of doing things the right way. We're ahead of other sports and other leagues, so it's just a matter of continuing to find ways to refine it and that's what you have to do and that's what we're doing. You make decisions based on good data. Elbows to the head aren't a part of the NHL -- if it happens, you're suspended. It's not illegal for a shoulder to hit part of the body, but if it's a guy 6-foot-6, whose shoulder hits someone 5-6, is that illegal? These are the areas we're trying to clear up here. It's not black and white and it's not easy. NHL.com: Has the game become a lot more difficult to manage and play over the years? Sutter: The players are bigger, faster, there are more games and there's better coaching. So, combine all that and, yes, it makes it that much more. And don't forget, the salary cap has also made everything better and enabled everyone to play on an even ground. NHL.com: Do you expect to be busy at the free-agency signing period? Sutter: We dealt with free agency over the (Olympic) break. We signed two unrestricted players in (Rene) Bourque and (Matt) Stajan. We've taken care of our top two guys in free agency and now we're probably in the same position as everyone else -- waiting to see how guys to play.
NHL.com: What is Calgary's draft-day philosophy? NHL.com: Are you pleased with your team's performance down the stretch? Sutter: We had a great start to the season and then had a tough January and now we're fighting for that playoff spot. At first, it seemed we were in a position for a division title and playoff berth. We have a good team and we've played well. It's all about our top guys being the top guys.

| QB Garcia still wants to play, questions Bucs' philosophy - Tampa Bay Online Posted: 10 Mar 2010 08:51 AM PST Published: March 10, 2010 TAMPA - Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia realistically understands his situation. He is 40 years old, has been out the NFL for one season and would be a gamble for any team who signs him. Nevertheless, with the New York Giants showing interest in Garcia as a backup Eli Manning, he is ready for another shot at resuming his career. "It's one of those of these things where my agent is out there. He has talked to people and it sounds like there is some interest out there," Garcia said. "It's just a matter of that interest stepping over and becoming a reality and somebody offering me a contract and getting the chance to come in and be a part of their team and hopefully be in a role where I can help a young guy out, or be a supportive backup, and go from there." Garcia was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders in 2009, but the veteran quarterback believes he still has enough left in his tank to backup an established quarterback. "I feel like I'm as healthy and as young-feeling and as active as I've ever been," Garcia said. "Now it's just a matter of somebody wanting to give me that opportunity to come in and have a positive affect in the locker room. "I think that's something I really want to be able to do and for people to understand that I'm not at all that type of person at all that is going to come in and disrupt the team chemistry or the energy. I want to come in and be supportive and be a part of something positive." One team Garcia does not expect to bid for his services is Tampa Bay. Garcia's was Tampa Bay's starting quarterback in 2007 and 2008, leading his team to a 9-7 record in both years. Tampa Bay won the NFC South title in 2007 and Garcia appeared in the Pro Bowl that year. However, Tampa Bay did not re-sign Garcia after he became free agent in 2009. Garcia said he is still close friends with Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson and found it difficult to watch Tampa Bay's 3-13 season in 2009. "I think that obviously there are some definite changes being made, but it just doesn't seem like they are being made to really help the team right now," Garcia said. "I don't know what the thoughts are from the ownership [Glazers] standpoint, or general manager [Mark Dominik] standpoint, but it's tough when you're not necessarily opening the door to free agency to come in and help your team, or try to strengthen your team in a certain way outside of the draft. "I mean, to rely on young players in the draft is a difficult position to put your team in in order to be competitive. That's just something they have to figure out and hopefully they do figure it out." Reporter Anwar S. Richardson can be reached at (813) 259-8425. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
