I've considered joining the Republican Party. But before I do, I have a general question on its philosophy. As I understand the root of Republican beliefs, government involvement in the affairs of citizens is not acceptable, especially in the area of free enterprise. It's pretty much stay out of our way — "the best government is no government" kind of thing.

My serious question is: Are tax breaks government intervention? Consider personal tax advantages such as annual income tax collections (the more income you earn the less percentage of that income you have to pay), insurance company tax advantages, corporate tax advantages, small business tax advantages and other governmental involvements. There are also specific tax deductions and general incentive help for farms, industry, finance and other marketplaces such as importing and exporting, and incentives for research.

Are the above governmental undertakings governmental interference? If not, how do they differ?

Does the Republican philosophy embrace a single-percentage tax on everyone and everything across the board? For example, everyone pays 15 percent — no breaks for anyone or anything.

I am truly serious. Does the manipulation of governmental taxing policy constitute governmental intervention? If not, what does? Does the Republican Party philosophy represent the idea that everyone, all elements and all citizens of the United States, should "do it all on their own," a totally "your own bootstraps" thing?

— Bonita Beach has lost one of its most loyal protectors.

Marge Ward, co-founder of the Citizens Association of Bonita Beach (CABB), died this morning.

Marge and her surviving husband, David Ward, founded CABB in 1985 to keep Bonita Beach clean and open to public use.

"When you're given this beauty by God and nature, you shouldn't make a junk heap out of it," Marge once said.

Kathy McGrath, a member of the Imperial River Conservancy, said Marge Ward's philosophy was "the public had a sovereign right to free access to the beach."

The Wards' accomplishments through CABB included expanding Bonita Beach parking and organizing a Coastal Clean Up Day. Marge Ward was also a vocal opponent of off-shore oil drilling.

David and Marge Ward moved to Bonita Springs from Buffalo, N.Y. in the early 1980s. Marge served as president of the organization until it disbanded in 2006.

She was 82-years old. According to family friend, Cindy Ellsworth, Ward was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. A cause of death has not been determined.
