KALAMAZOO — Kalamazoo College is hosting the largest philosophy conference on its campus in more than 20 years Friday and Saturday, and the general public is welcome to attend.

Between 80 and 100 students and faculty members from various higher education institutions are expected to attend.

Organizers say it is also one of the largest conferences anywhere in many years devoted to the topic of 19th century German philosopher Georg Hegel and his view that social institutions make freedom possible.

Scholars from England and France will join leading American scholars presenting at the conference.

Friday night's keynote address "Hegel and the Sociality of Action" will be delivered by the world's leading Hegel scholar, Robert Pippin.

Pippin is a member of the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought and recipient of the Andrew M. Mellon Foundation's Distinguished Achievement Award.

Throughout Saturday, leading scholars in critical social philosophy will examine Hegel's contention that social institutions make freedom possible.

All events will be held in the Olmsted Room of Mandelle Hall at the college, 1200 Academy St.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren will hold his official combine news conference Friday afternoon. But several reporters (including this AFC North blogger) caught up with Holmgren for several minutes in the hallway of Lucas Oil Stadium.

The brief interview session was fairly light-hearted. But Holmgren did admit he's spent a lot of time discussing "philosophy" with Browns coach Eric Mangini. Holmgren retained the coach for his second season.

Holmgren also said he wants his coach to lighten up a little, and it starts by not frowning so much, which Mangini has been known to do.

"I can't emphasize it enough, smile," Holmgren said of Mangini, sparking laughter from the group. "He's a good coach... He's doing great. I saw him on the plane yesterday and he was smiling like crazy."
