| Moore: Salvation Army deserves support despite its bad philosophy - Milford Daily News Posted: 30 Dec 2009 05:28 AM PST A campaign to financially punish a religious organization for one of its principles apparently has not hurt local donations. Some homosexual advocates have called for a boycott of the Salvation Army because of its stance on same-sex relationships. In keeping with the traditional Judeo-Christian stance, Salvationists oppose homosexual conduct. This isn't necessarily a new issue. In 2001, a Salvation Army group in San Francisco offered domestic partner benefits, but it quickly reversed that decision. In 2004, a New York City-based Salvation Army group said it would close soup kitchens if the local government forced it to provide such benefits. Amid the boycott rhetoric, I haven't detected any impact locally. Maj. Steven Koehler of the St. Charles (Ill.) Tri-City Corps and Envoy Scott Hurula of the Oakbrook Terrace (Ill.) Corps said last week their groups were slightly ahead of last year with their annual Christmas kettle campaign. Aside from donations, the same-sex issue is difficult to confront because there are two compelling cases to be made. I disagree with the Salvation Army's view of homosexuality. Whether it's a misinterpretation of scripture or the Bible simply being mistaken, the Judeo-Christian condemnation of homosexuality is wrong. But the Salvation Army performs a vital function in society, and it helps anyone with no strings attached. Last year, the group assisted more than 33 million people. I understand the position of homosexual advocates who oppose groups that work against their interests, but the Salvation Army's value to those in need cannot be underestimated. Though we disagree on homosexuality, the Salvationists are dedicated to helping everyone they can. Engaging groups about their stance on homosexuality is important for finally tearing down a barrier to full citizenship for gays. But the Salvation Army has a crucial role to play, and it deserves continued financial support. Jerry Moore is the opinions editor for Suburban Life Publications. | My Personal Philosophy - LIVING LAKE COUNTRY Posted: 29 Dec 2009 04:14 PM PST I have my own philosophy, cannibalized from religions, politics, philosophies, science, art, history, and my life experiences, all of which are filtered through the 3 lb jelly constancy universe that is my brain. My experiences and my mental hardware helped to shape this philosophy; this philosophy changes and grows it is not a static concept and I am more than willing to change it if I realize my folly. My personal philosophy is a virtual structure, rigid in some parts but fluid in others. Here is some of what I cherish and acts as my guide: - All Humans Beings from every nation, every race, every religion, are equal and are born with intrinsic rights. I don't care where people think the rights come from. - Everybody deserves a second chance after they make a mistake - Nobody should force their lifestyle on others - Government is a "tool", it is a mechanism, it is nether good or bad - The fool or jester is wise, ignore their advice at your own peril - Study the lessons of History - Politics is no excuse to ignore rules of common courtesy - "Do unto others as you would do unto yourself" or "Prepare to be treated by me on how you treat me". I realize it is a 2 way street. - My dog Thor thinks he is a "people" - Do not forsake your time "alive" on earth for ethereal non-material prizes - Deep-sixing your "idealism" is a ticket to cynicism. - Reality is not a fixed concept, because perception precedes it! - Truth? At least try to back it up. - Love your family and friends - Don't waste your time hating others - Don't call others victims while you consider yourself the "victim" - Not everybody's situation is the same - Fight for what you believe in - Laugh at yourself - Perfection is an ideal but not a "rule" - Government and Corporations are big and imperfect - Ironies, especially when they happen to you, should be cherished - No philosophy, religion, government, person has all the answers - We know nothing, the vastness of the universe from where ever it came from dwarf's us all - Clutch is the greatest band on the planet - People are animals - Never give up - The earth is our only home at the moment, try to give it a little respect while it lets us live on it - The "little guy" always has it worse than the "big guys" above him. - Don't blame other's for your short comings - ….more to added later!

| Book Review: Language, Truth and Logic - Associated Content Posted: 30 Dec 2009 08:56 AM PST A.J. Ayer's Language, Truth and Logic is a tough-minded philosopher's book. Through Ayer's method of logical analysis and the verification principle, Ayer is able to cover a lot of ground deeming much metaphysics, theology, ethics and traditional philosophy as misguided and senseless. Though, I must note that many of Ayer's analyses of problems are only cursory and more in depth analyses are needed. Of course, one can take Ayer as indicating the way for those who would like to continue along the lines offered. This being the case, I will only focus on a few important and interesting sections of the book. Ayer conceives of the function of philosophy as being entirely critical. Philosophers can analyze beliefs to see whether they are consistent or determine what criteria are to be used in determining the truth or falsity of propositions, but philosophers do not deal with empirical facts. As far as philosophy's relation with science, Ayer claims that it is a mistake to believe that philosophy is a discipline that can live alongside the sciences. Philosophers are not in a position to furnish speculative truths, which would compete with the hypotheses of science. The philosopher is also not to pass a priori judgments on the validity of scientific theories. Essentially, the goal of the philosopher is to clarify the propositions of scientific theories by exhibiting logical relationships and defining the symbols used in them. I must admit that this view of philosophy seems limited, and instead of calling it philosophy, I'd call it critical analysis or something along those lines. | Favre: Don't hit panic button - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 30 Dec 2009 12:59 PM PST Judd Zulgad has been on the NFL beat since the 2003 season, when he began a (gasp) two-year stint covering the Green Bay Packers for the Star Tribune. Zulgad has covered the Vikings since 2005 and is as shocked as anyone that he is again following the daily exploits of Brett Favre. Chip Scoggins knew his second season covering the Vikings would be eventful when he saw the news helicopter tracking Brett Favre to Winter Park and a guy dressed in a full parrot costume standing outside. Find Judd on Facebook. Find Chip on Facebook. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
