| Lesson in funk philosophy - The Province Posted: 28 Dec 2009 08:30 AM PST Although Emilio Castillo is the nominal leader of Tower of Power, after 40 years he seems more like the coach. He moulds and balances the Oakland band and schools new members on the kind of funk it plays and what is hip in Tower of Power's eyes. Castillo is being modest when he says he's only an adequate musician-- not a soloist, not technically advanced -- but he doesn't downplay his role in keeping the band together and on track. "A lot of my fortes and what I do are very similar to being a coach," Castillo agrees. "I do have a talent for finding good musicians and shaping them. Our job is to make them as good as they can be." The horn player has guided the band since 1968 and its 19 subsequent albums. Tower of Power has had a few hits, such as "You're Still a Young Man," "So Very Hard to Go" or "What is Hip," and has withstood the coming and going of as many as 60 musicians, but its idea of funk seldom has wavered. "I don't know if the band has a philosophy but we do have a concept," he starts to explain. In the mid to late '70s, Tower of Power was urged by its record company, Columbia, to try disco. Tower tried to please the label but failed and couldn't help noticing that every horn band they heard sounded "like a bastardized version of Tower of Power." So it went back to what it knew best. "We made a rule that we would never stray and when we did that things started looking up. "We had a good idea of what we wanted to sound like right from the start but it took us a while to realize that. "One of our former singers said, 'You could play the phone book and it would still sound like Tower of Power." Thus, having its own sound, Castillo might coach but he doesn't interfere. In that regard, he is a benevolent dictator. "I don't control them too much," he says of Stephen Kupka, Francis Prestia, David Garibaldi, Mic Gillette, Greg Adams, Lenny Williams and Lenny Pickett, many of whom have been with Castillo from the beginning. "And, when I do, it backfires. I end up apologizing." | New Scientology Freezone Newsletter - PRLog (free press release) Posted: 28 Dec 2009 02:56 PM PST PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 28, 2009 – "The Monthly newsletter, called the FREE THETAN is designed to give people an idea of what the original philosophy of Hubbard was really about." Said Michael Moore, President of the IFA. "Unfortunately the church has altered the philosophy and violated its tenets so much so, that there is now virtually no actual scientology practiced in the church any more. It is really just scientology in name only these days. For the real stuff you have to go to the independent practitioners in the field." He went on.
The FREE THETAN is a monthly newsletter freely available from the IFA website and contains news, information, success stories from the scientology freezone and some quotes by the founder of scientology, L. Ron Hubbard The IFA is a free association of individuals, auditors and groups who believe they should be free to practice the original philosophy of Lafayette Ron Hubbard. They believe that, since the death of the founder of the movement, the Church of Scientology has strayed from the original philosophy and purpose of the group which Hubbard first researched and developed. As the members of the IFA do not wish to participate in the practice of an altered philosophy they have elected to practice their chosen philosophy independently of the church. The IFA has a great number of members around the world and provides support and assistance to its members including a quarterly journal and technical assistance with the original philosophy and technology researched and developed by Hubbard. | To rest or not? That was the question to Belichick - Providence Journal Posted: 28 Dec 2009 02:42 PM PST FOXBORO — Bill Belichick has a philosophy on whether to rest some of his key players for this Sunday's regular-season finale, and it's a rather familiar one: "I do what's best for our football team. That's my philosophy," he said Monday. That was pretty much all Belichick would say in his late-morning news conference about how he'll approach personnel decisions for the game against the Texans. He added that he had not yet made any decisions, as he and his coaching staff had just wrapped up their review of New England's win over Jacksonville. It also may be a little early to determine some player's status, as nicked-up players can see an improvement in just a couple of days' time, which would like influence Belichick's decision-making process. It is believed, however, that neither Ty Warren nor Vince Wilfork will be in uniform. Warren played through considerable pain in his sprained right ankle on Sunday because it was a clinching game for the Pats, and wanted to help his team ice the AFC East title. With that done, he can rest to be as healthy as possible for the playoffs. Wilfork wasn't able to contribute against the Jags, and with little on the line in Houston, it doesn't make sense for him to jeopardize things further, particularly with free agency looming on the horizon. ****** Following along the lines of his philosophy when it comes to resting players, Belichick cited the same philosophy when the Colts' decision to effectively throw Sunday's game — and with it the chance at an undefeated season — was broached. Belichick said he didn't see the game, which is understandable, and called New York's victory a good one for it on the road. But when asked if he ever contemplated sitting Tom Brady when the Pats were 14-0 or 15-0 in 2007, he turned to philosophy, though he had an amused look on his face that indicated he was likely holding something back. "Whatever we did in any other year was whatever we thought was the best thing to do, whatever that was — 2003, 2008, whatever it was," he said. "We do what we thought was best, whether anybody agrees with it or not." In a radio appearance earlier Monday morning, Tom Brady said it was hard to argue with the Colts because "they've made so many great decisions all season." He went on to say, however, that he was glad he played every week of that 2007 season. Belichick jumped at the chance to toss a little praise toward New England's offensive line, which has not allowed a sack in the last four games. Against Jacksonville, Brady did not even absorb a hit from a Jags' defender. "I thought our protection was really good yesterday. I thought those guys did a good job and there were a number of times Tom had the chance to step into the pocket and had some clear throwing lanes, particularly in the red area, which always makes those throws a little better. I thought our offensive line did a real good job in protection and that certainly helped our overall passing efficiency." Brady commented that it feels a lot better for him waking up on a Monday morning when he hasn't been hit. ****** Now that the Patriots have wrapped up the top spot in the AFC East, their list of opponents for 2010 has been finalized. In addition to the usual home and away games against division opponents Buffalo, Miami and New York, New England (and the rest of the East) faces the AFC North and NFC North, hosts this year's AFC South winner and travels to this year's AFC West winner. That means they will face the Colts, Ravens, Bengals, Packers, Vikings, Bills, Dolphins and Jets at Gillette Stadium, while traveling to San Diego, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, Buffalo, Miami and New York. | Belichick mum on playing time for finale - ESPN.com Posted: 28 Dec 2009 02:49 PM PST FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick gave his AFC East champions a day to rest Monday. He's not saying whether he'll do the same for his starters on Sunday. That's when New England ends its regular season at Houston against the Texans, who still have an outside chance at a wild-card spot in the postseason and, if they make it, could even meet the Patriots in the first round. "I honestly haven't given it any thought at all," Belichick said Monday, the day after a 35-7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars that clinched the division. "My thoughts are on Jacksonville. We knew that was a game we needed to win and we put a lot into that game and I'm glad the results came out the way they did. "Like I said last week, we'll deal with next week next week, so we'll deal with this week this week." Belichick-speak aside, the coach departed from his customary day-after-game manner. He was unusually cheerful following the Patriots' outstanding performance at a time of year when teams hope to be approaching their peak. "I'm doing good," he said, "doing real good. It was a good day for us yesterday." A very good day. The Patriots scored touchdowns on five of their first seven possessions and rushed for a season-high 197 yards. Tom Brady threw four touchdown passes and only three incompletions and for the fourth straight came wasn't sacked. Randy Moss caught three of those scoring throws. And Wes Welker added 13 catches to his NFL-leading total, now a club-record 122. The defense came up with two interceptions and held Maurice Jones-Drew to 63 yards rushing, nearly 25 below his average. "We'll try to hopefully stay on that track," Belichick said, "good preparation, good practice and play well." But just who will play? Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell pulled Peyton Manning and other starters from Sunday's game against the New York Jets with the Colts leading 15-10 in the third quarter. They already had clinched homefield advantage throughout the AFC playoffs but had a chance for an unbeaten season. That ended when the Jets came back for a 29-15 win. "I think they do what's best for their football team," Belichick said. "What other interest do we have? We have an interest in our football team, that's it." So is it in the Patriots interest for the starters to play the entire game Sunday? Or would it be more prudent to give some of them much of the game -- if not the entire game -- off to avoid the risk of injury even though a loss could leave them with the No. 4 seed in the AFC playoffs instead of No. 3. Belichick said he has a philosophy about what to do after clinching a playoff berth. "Absolutely," he said. "I do what's best for our football team. That's my philosophy." He gave his players a rare Monday off, perhaps in recognition of the impressive effort that brought the Patriots (10-5) their sixth division title in seven years. They only missed last year when the Miami Dolphins won it on a tiebreaker after both finished at 11-5. New England's season ended without a playoff spot. This year, the Patriots will play their first-round game at home, where Brady has won 20 consecutive regular-season games. With seven teams still in the running for the two AFC wild-card berths, Belichick's staff will have a busy week doing early scouting. "Some of the teams that are possibilities in the playoffs we are pretty familiar with, and others not as familiar, or some are more recent [opponents] than others," he said. "We'll kind of have to figure all that out here in the next couple of days. Right now, our [focus] this morning was to come in and watch the Jacksonville game, make some corrections on that, talk about the things that we need to do and then get ready for Houston." Going into their last regular-season game in 2007, the Patriots already had clinched homefield advantage for the AFC playoffs and were trying to become the first team to go 16-0. Belichick decided to play his first-stringers from start to finish and they won 38-35 over the New York Giants, who went on to beat them in the Super Bowl. But the Patriots had a first-round bye that season, giving them extra time to rest and tend to injuries. This season, they won't have that before the playoff game on Jan. 9 or 10. "Whatever we did in any other year was whatever we thought was the best thing to do, whatever that was 2003, 2008, or whatever it was," Belichick said. "We do what we thought was best, whether anybody agrees with it or not, but that's what we did and that's what we will continue to do."
