Bayern's sleepless van Gaal eyes Schalke - YAHOO!

Posted: 06 Nov 2009 09:27 PM PST

BERLIN (AFP) – Schalke 04 missed the chance to claim second in the Bundesliga behind leaders Leverkusen on Saturday after they were held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Bayern Munich.

Bayern defender Daniel van Buyten put the hosts ahead at Munich's Allianz Arena before Schalke's Joel Matip's header just before half-time gave his side a point which keeps the Royal Blues fourth while Bayern drop to eighth.

"I am very pleased both with the result and performance," said Schalke coach Felix Magath.

"But I am a bit sad that we couldn't take control of the game after a good opening phase.

"We were reacting to them rather than creating.

"We were under pressure in the second-half, but we defended well and didn't give away many chances, so we deserved the 1-1 draw."

Having seen their Champions League aspirations effectively ended after their 2-0 defeat at home to Bordeaux last Tuesday, Bayern have now dropped further down the German league table leaving coach Louis van Gaal visibly unimpressed.

"Our goal was to beat Schalke, unfortunately that didn't happen," said van Gaal.

"We didn't play well enough in the first ten minutes, even though we dominated.

"We had many chances which missed their target by only two, three or five centimetres.

"We have to change that.

"It is frustrating that we didn't score again in the second-half."

The hosts took the lead when Munich defender Holger Badstuber swung in a free-kick, the ball spun off the back of Schalke's ex-Germany striker Kevin Kuranyi into the path of Bayern's van Buyten, who tapped home on 31 minutes.

But Schalke, now unbeaten in their last seven games, fought back when defender Matip jumped the highest of a posse of players when a long-ball flew in to header past Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt on 43 minutes.

With second-placed Werder Bremen and Hamburg, third, playing Sunday, both Schalke and Hoffenheim missed their chance to claim second place after Leverkusen had routed Frankfurt 4-0 on Friday.

Hosts Hoffenheim took a 1-0 lead only to see the three-points snatched off them after conceding two goals in five second-half minutes to hand Wolfsburg a 2-1 win to go fifth in the table.

Hoffenheim went ahead against the defending Bundesliga champions when hot-shot striker Vedad Ibisevic got on the end of a pin-point long-ball from Brazil striker Maicosuel to head home on 23 minutes.

But Wolfsburg hit back with two goals in five minutes when chief playmaker Zvjezdan Misimovic bagged his sixth goal in 12 games on 52 minutes.

And Brazil striker Grafite put his side ahead when he enjoyed a simple goal on 57 minutes when his shot flew in off the ankle of a Hoffenheim defender which leaves the home side seventh in the table.

Stuttgart's under-pressure coach Markus Babbel picked up his second point in as many Bundesliga matches after his side's goalless draw with Borussia Moenchengladbach.

But the result leaves his side 14th in the league and hovering just above the relegation zone.

In the day's other results, Mainz are up to sixth in the league after their 1-0 win at home to Nuremberg while Freiburg enjoyed a 2-1 win at Bochum.

On Friday, league leaders Leverkusen opened a four-point gap at the top of the Bundesliga after scoring three goals in the game's first 11 minutes in their 4-0 win over Frankfurt.

Having been named in the Germany squad for the first time since February earlier on Friday, Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling netted in the second minute.

Stefan Reinartz headed home on six minutes and then 19-year-old Toni Kroos rifled home a shot into the top right-hand corner on 16 minutes as the team's younger stars enjoyed their time in the limelight.

Then substitute midfielder Lars Bender, 20, came off the bench in the 83rd minute and hit the fourth goal just three minutes later.

TCU shuts out UNLV; Air Force gets past CSU - Daily Herald

Posted: 01 Nov 2009 12:07 AM PDT

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Antoine Hicks grabbed the pass over the middle and slipped from the grasp of a defender, who got the shoe while TCU's touchdown-producing receiver ran to the end zone again.

Nothing is slowing down the Horned Frogs as they chase a BCS bid.

Hicks' shoeless sprint to the end zone for the final 45 yards of a 75-yard touchdown was part of another dominating performance for the eighth-ranked Horned Frogs, a 41-0 victory over struggling UNLV on Saturday.

A week after their 38-7 victory at BYU boosted the Frogs (8-0, 4-0 Mountain West) to sixth in the Bowl Championship Series standings and past Boise State, Andy Dalton threw three touchdown passes, Ed Wesley scored running and receiving and the Frogs' defense smothered UNLV for its first shutout this season -- and sixth at home since 2003.

"To have a letdown after the BYU game would make the win over BYU not mean anything," offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse said.

Despite losing two fumbles in the first quarter, TCU built an early 17-0 lead -- including Hicks' seventh touchdown (four receiving, three rushing) on 17 touches this season -- and were never challenged by the Rebels (3-6, 1-4). TCU has won 10 straight overall and 12 in a row at home.

"We talked about starting fast. We told them, if you want to win a championship, you've got to get on a roll," coach Gary Patterson said.

Asked if that roll had started, Patterson said hopefully it has with a shutout the week after winning at BYU.

While Patterson was talking about the Mountain West championship, their lofty goal is going to a BCS bowl -- and winning that.

"Climb the pyramid," said Patterson, motioning to the chart of goals in the team meeting room on which each accomplishment is shaded in purple. "We just colored more in."

Boise State (8-0), the only other undefeated team from a non-automatic qualifying BCS conference, beat San Jose State 45-7 on Saturday. That was the Broncos' eighth consecutive victory since losing to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl last December.

In their 12-game winning streak at Amon Carter Stadium, the Frogs have outscored their opponents by an average margin of 43-9. The last loss was to Utah two years ago. The 19th-ranked Utes, likely the biggest obstacle for TCU to get through the regular season undefeated, will be in Fort Worth in two weeks.

TCU has to go to San Diego State before that.

UNLV managed only 160 yards, 40 coming on a run by backup quarterback Mike Clausen, and was shut out for the first time in 69 games -- since losing 7-0 to San Diego State on Nov. 8, 2003. A week ago, the Rebels ended a 20-game Mountain West road losing streak that dated to 2005 with a 34-17 win at New Mexico.

"TCU is obviously an excellent football team. They're deserving of their ranking," coach Mike Sanford said. "I don't remember ever in my career playing against as good a defense as that."

Air Force 31, Colorado State 16: At Fort Collins, Colo., Tim Jefferson did less thinking and better playing. Jefferson, starting for the injured Connor Dietz, threw two touchdowns passes and Air Force rolled to victory over Colorado State.

"Before I would think a lot when I was out on the field," Jefferson said. "When I got to sit back and watch Connor, relax and see how the team moved progressively down the field. "I noticed I was able to do the same thing.

Jefferson completed 7-of-12 passes for 111 yards and ran for 35 yards of Air Force's 271 yards on the ground.

"Tim was better and was even more assertive and showed more maturity," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said of Jefferson. "He seemed like he was older in the way he played."

Kyle Halderman scored two touchdowns and Erik Soderberg kicked two field goals, including a career-long 50-yarder for Air Force (5-4, 4-2 MWC).

Reggie Rembert had his third interception of the season and Air Force punted only once.

Grant Stucker ran for a touchdown and Ben LeLine had a 22-yard field goal for Colorado State (3-6, 0-5). The Rams have lost six in a row, their longest streak since losing 13 in a row over 2006 and 07.

"We just couldn't put points on the board, couldn't stay in a drive," Stucker said. "We couldn't make the big play and we just couldn't execute."

San Diego State 23, New Mexico 20: At San Diego, Ryan Lindley threw three touchdown passes to lift San Diego State to a win over New Mexico, handing the Lobos their 12th straight loss.

Lindley threw a pair of TD passes to DeMarco Sampson, including the go-ahead score on a 4-yard pass with 7:54 to go in the game. Lindley, who was 22 of 38 for 253 yards, also had scoring passes of 18 yards to Alston Umuolo and a 7-yarder to Sampson.

Donovan Porterie threw for one touchdown and ran for another for New Mexico (0-8, 0-4 MWC), which had its eight-game winning streak over San Diego State (4-4, 2-2) snapped. James Aho kicked two field goals.

New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley was back on the sidelines after missing one game while serving a 10-day suspension after he was accused of throwing a punch at receivers coach J.B. Gerald in a Sept. 20 incident.
