| Bookmarks - ‘Twisdom’ looks at practical side of life - Star News Online Posted: 17 Oct 2009 12:35 PM PDT His latest philosophy tome, however comes in smaller packages. Morris, in short, has discovered the Tweet. His 20th and latest is "Twisdom: A Philosopher Ponders Life in 140 Characters or Less" (Morris Institute-Wisdom/Works, $15.99 paperback). "Twitter is not mainly about telling the world, or your 14 followers, what you had for lunch," Morris writes. "It's about building a new form of community. It's about learning. It's about support, inspiration and daily motivation. And it's also about fun." Morris – who's also been blogging recently on The Hufflington Post – says he's aware of the downsides of the Twitterverse: the profanity, the self-absorbed soliloquies, the frequent triviality. His experiences in his own circle, however, have mostly been positive: "Twitter is what we make of it. I've found people who want to use it to think, touch lives, work together, support each other and meet other like-minded individuals who want to do the same … It's an idea camp for us all!" In "Twisdom," Morris reproduces some of his own tweets. Here's a brief sampling: "Failure is a test. Do you rise to the occasion or fall by the wayside?" "The most important thing I've learned from Socrates is the importance of relentless self-examination." "And to watch what you drink." "Courage is the power of choice even in the face of fear." "If memory is indeed the mother of all wisdom, mistake may be its father." Morris, a Durham native, was a Morehead scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a Ph.D. in both philosophy and religious studies from Yale. He taught for 15 years at Notre Dame, where he consistently ranked at or near the top in student polls; in some years, as much as one-eighth of the student body signed up for his classes. More recently, he's gone into the "public philosophy" business, working through the Morris Institute. You can order "Twisdom" through the institute's Web site: http://www.morrisinstitute.com. | Ecuador's Correa plans to bypass drug patents - Mississippi Press Posted: 17 Oct 2009 12:28 PM PDT (AP) QUITO, Ecuador - President Rafael Correa says he is preparing to override a host of drug patents to provide lower-priced generic medications in Ecuador. Correa says Ecuador will seek "compulsory licenses" from companies to produce medications considered indispensable. Under World Trade Organization rules, countries can issue "compulsory licenses" to disregard patent rights, but only after negotiating with the patent owners and paying adequate compensation. Governments can skip the negotiating by declaring a public health emergency. Correa says access to medicine is a human right and his decision is motivated by "the philosophy of 21st century socialism." He made the announcement Saturday on the radio show "Dialogue with the President." This content has passed through fivefilters.org. | ||

| Torbush's defense must meet challenge of Franklin's spread offense - Jackson Clarion-Ledger Posted: 17 Oct 2009 12:49 PM PDT Today, 11:30 a.m., Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium, Murfreesboro, Tenn. (ESPNU)Carl Torbush, smack in the middle of his fourth decade as a college football coach, knows the offensive reputation of coaches like Mike Leach, Hal Mumme - and Tony Franklin, the Middle Tennessee State offensive coordinator against whom he'll have to match wits today. "They all have worked together some time or another, and they've all taken the game and tweaked it their own personal way, their own philosophy and all that," Torbush, the first-year MSU defensive coordinator, said. Franklin is in his first year at MTSU after being fired mid-season at Auburn last year. For head coach Rick Stockstill, he is attempting to install the spread. It has had its share of growing pains, but MTSU is generally in the top half of offensive categories in the Sun Belt. MTSU is averaging just shy of 400 yards per game, tilted heavily toward the pass, and is scoring 24.2 points a game. The lone hiccup is a 31-7 loss at Troy on Oct. 6. "The game of football, you see where it's headed," Torbush said. "I think if everybody had their perfect world, fans and officials and everybody else, it'd be about 50-49 every game. That would make a lot of really sad defensive coaches." Look out for these Blue RaidersDwight Dasher, QuarterbackFor the second straight week, Mississippi State has a quarterback about which to worry. Granted, Dwight Dasher isn't on the same plane as Houston's Case Keenum, but he also doesn't try to do what Keenum does, either. At 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, Dasher is a dual-threat quarterback - and is MTSU's leading rusher and passer. His 304 yards and three touchdowns is easily best among MTSU's runners; his 1,273 yards, eight touchdowns and 56 percent completion percentage makes him among the Sun Belt's leading quarterbacks. Carl Torbush, the MSU defensive coordinator, compared him to the Georgia Tech quarterback, Josh Nesbitt. Patrick Honeycutt, WR: 20 catches, 220 yards, one touchdown Kevin Brown, S: three interceptions, five pass deflections Chris McCoy, DE: 8.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries 3 Keys to a Bulldog Victory1. Keep running, Anthony DixonLast week, the key for State was to run the ball early and often against Houston's weak defensive line. MSU should copy-and-paste that onto this week's game plan, too. MTSU has given up 145.7 yards per game on the ground this year, and Anthony Dixon should feast. 2. Contain Dwight DasherJudging by statistics alone, Middle Tennessee has few other offensive weapons than dual-threat quarterback Dwight Dasher. If State's defensive line can put pressure on him and contain him as a rusher, how will Middle Tennessee State score points? 3. Hold on to the football, fellasDo we even have to write this out? Turnovers have happened so many times in the past three weeks that they're turning into part of who Mississippi State is as a team. Keep that up on the road against a capable team, and it's a fourth straight loss for sure. Stat That Counts-8: Mississippi State's turnover margin, which ranks 109th in the 120-team Bowl Subdivision. The Bulldogs have lost 18 turnovers - 117th in FBS. In their last three games alone, the Bulldogs have lost 13 turnovers. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. | ||
